A union coalition of the CWA (Communications Workers of America) and the Teamsters has established its presence in the American Airlines company that employs 14,000 staff in passenger services, reservations, and ground handling. The CWA union had struggled in vain for 20 years to represent staff but the merger with US Airways (with a history of union representation) has reversed this situation. For union leaders, the victory is all the more precious insofar as that it gives them a presence in the South, in the “Right to Work” States that are generally hostile to unionism.
