The United Auto Workers (UAW) union is recommending that the big 3 automakers (General Motors, Ford, Fiat Chrysler Auto) together set up a common platform for purchasing healthcare. The idea, born of the companies’ discomfort with constantly rising healthcare costs, has been included in the current round of wage negotiations. Employers, who each time negotiations come round try to have the healthcare users take on more of the healthcare costs themselves, appear ready to explore this “creative” solution.
The goal is to maintain and if possible improve upon current levels of healthcare cover and above all cut costs. Dennis Williams, President of UAW is convinced that larger pools of patients will be able to negotiate better rates (hospitals, doctors, medication). Thus the idea of grouping, under the ‘big 3’ umbrella, factory workers, white collar workers, retirees and their families, that will make for more than one million group members.
