United States: United Auto Workers ranks grew by 6% in one year

In 2009, there were only 355,191 members, the lowest level since the 1940s, when the union was created.  This number was well below its peak of 1.5 million members in 1979.  Bob King, new UAW President, thinks this slow recovery is the result of the recovery of the auto industry in the US and of recruitment campaigns in other sectors.  The UAW has been pressuring the game industry and higher education.  This is how 10,000 workers from the Tropicana Casino, Atlantic City, Foxwoods Resort, Connecticut, and the University of California joined the union.  Assistant teachers and researchers with flimsy careers in universities appreciate the UAW’s know-how in terms of wage negotiations.  The recovery of the auto industrial was also beneficial.  The Big 3 (General Motors, Chrysler and Ford) sold more cars last year and they cautiously started recruiting again.  Thus, this year, General Motors plans on re-hiring 2,000 fired employees.  Ford is planning 7,000 recruitments in 2011 and 2012.
