United Steelworkers is diving into the WTO’s universe to defend American jobs against Chinese “supremacy.” Indeed, in early September, Leo Gerard, international USW leader, sent a case to the US Department of Commerce, accusing China of “illegally” subsidizing its renewable energy industry at America’s expense. Therefore, the union is asking the white house to champion their case to the WTO. The sectors targeted are: the manufacture of fluorescent light bulbs, solar panels, and win turbines. According to the USW’s representatives, China “illegally” helps its businesses export by giving them subsidies to buy cheap land, offering tax credit and loans with low interest rates. These measures have allowed China to “dominate” the sector, to the US’ expense.
