WalMart has made a U turn on its employment policy. The largest private employer in America will increase its minimum hourly wage to $9 in April and even more, $10 by next February. That new rate is 38% higher than the federal minimum hourly wage of $7.25.
Half a million associates of WalMart and Sam’s Club among 1.4 million US workers are affected by the new measure and it will cost $1 billion to the giant to keep its promise. For years, labor activists supported by UFCW (United Food and Commercial Workers) have fought with what they call « the anti union behemoth ». Under the Our WalMart campaign, they have engaged in strikes, investor outreach and sidewalk protests during holidays such as Thanksgiving. So, is it time to claim victory?...
