On 29 August acting Labor Secretary Julie Su proposed a new rule that raises the annual earnings cut-off above which employers do not have to pay overtime from $35,500 to $55,000. Currently employees earning <$35,500 p.a. are entitled to 1.5 times the basic wage when they work >40 hours a week. The Labor Department estimates the new rule could bring an additional 3.6 million employees into scope, costing employers $1.2 billion in the first year.
