Parliamentarians in Canada and Mexico, who are eager to ratify the United States–Mexico–Canada Agreement, over which heated negotiations have unfolded over more than 13 months, must wait for their US counterparts to examine and vote on the treaty during a 90-day session. For Mexico, the changes in the draft treaty mainly concern the automotive sector, such as modifications to rules of origin for the sector and local production requirements.
Rules of origin made more complex. For Mexico, the main change in USMCA concerns the industrial sector that is of greatest importance to the country: automobile construction, a sector that generated a turnover of some 83 billion dollars in 2017.
