In the United States, according to a report by labour market specialist Challenger Gray & Christmas (CGC) published on July 31, 2025, retailers cut 80,487 jobs between January and July 2025, an increase of 249% year-on-year. Since January 2025, in an unstable economic climate marked in particular by tariffs, store closures accounted for 120,226 layoffs, 66,879 restructuring and 35,641 bankruptcies.
