McDonald’s aims to sell up to 80% of the Chinese business to the Carlyle consortium, which already includes Citic, the Chinese state-owned conglomerate. The proposed deal value is expected to reach about US$2 billion. McDonald’s operates 2,200 stores in China, where 30% are under franchise. Under this new arrangement, all the remaining Chinese units would be under franchise, with McDonald’s retaining a stake of 20%.
