On 28 April, the private home subletting platform Airbnb informed its employees (global headcount of just 6,000 in 2021) of a revolutionary change to its work organisation that includes autonomy over teleworking arrangements, possibilities for moving location within a country with no change in salary, the right to work abroad for extended periods several times a year, and more… Airbnb intends to embrace the ‘flexibility’ factor in order to attract ‘the best talents’ and learn from the Covid period.
For Airbnb’s CEO Brian Chesky, the announcements launch “a new chapter” in the company’s work organization. In a message from company to staff the CEO said, “We want to hire and retain the best people in the world (like you). If we limited our talent pool to a commuting radius around our offices, we would be at a significant disadvantage. The best people live everywhere, not concentrated in one area. And by recruiting from a diverse set of communities, we will become a more diverse company....
