Amnesty International highlights human rights violations in the palm oil sector including at ‘sustainable’ plantations

In a report published on 30 November, Amnesty International denounces social and human rights violations in Indonesia’s palm oil sector that are occurring on such a scale as to call into question the ‘sustainability’ aspect of this sector, which is much prized by major agri-food, cosmetics, and household brands. Certification shortfalls, lax verification, and cursory consideration of working conditions in a sector that has been previously criticized for is environmental impact are some of the issues the Amnesty International report has highlighted.

‘The great palm oil scandal: Labour abuses behind big brand names’ 150 page report is the result of survey work carried out at the world’s leaning palm oil refiner and supplier, Singaporean based Wilmar’s palm oil plantations. The report traces its work through the sector to nine major multinational brand names including Unilever, Nestlé, Procter & Gamble, Kellogg’s, Colgate-Palmolive, Reckitt Benckiser, AFAMSA, ADM, and Elevance.
