Tough times ahead for Argentina’s auto jobs sector. While the auto union Smata pursues quarterly wage raises negotiations for the sector, different automakers continue to multiply both technical and partial unemployment measures. In a bid to protect jobs the Senate recently approved a law providing tax breaks for automakers that use Argentina-made car parts.
With about 4,500 workers either partially or technically unemployed the new law has managed to split a sector that has been in economic straights for almost a year. ‘In Córdoba last week, Renault halted all activity putting about 1,00 workers on technical unemployment,” explained Leonardo Almada, Smata spokesperson for the Córdoba area to Planet Labor.
