In Q3 2018, occupational illness and workplace accident disputes in Argentina plunged 42% compared with the same period in 2017 representing a record according to the study carried out by ART (Work related risk insurance), the entity in charge of workers’ medical and salary issues under recognized occupational illness and workplace accident situations. According to ART, the number of disputes had been rising exponentially since 2004 and the current center-right ruling government has repeatedly criticized what it terms the ‘occupational lawsuit industry’.
During Q3 2018, 16,397 lawsuits were recorded, down from 29,363 in Q3 2017. Buenos Aires city experienced steep falls (-61.9%), as did Cordoba (-74%). Argentina’s most populated region of Buenos Aires saw 42.8% fewer disputes. The trend is common to both the public and private sectors and savings to companies have been calculated by the ART, and reported in the press, as roughly ARS 30,000 million (€676 million).
