Argentina’s banking sector appears set for a stormy week. The Asociación Bancaria, the union of banking workers, has announced a 24-hour strike which will take place on Thursday 15 December, and is due to be backed by the organisation’s governing board on Monday. It will also be decided at the start of next week whether to plan a 48-hour strike in the week starting 19 December, if no agreement is reached between the group of professional chambers and the country’s labour ministry as regards end-of-year bonus and salary raises.
With the previous week marked by go-slow action, at foreign banks in particular, a meeting on Wednesday of employer groups, the sector’s trade union and the labour ministry was not able to defuse the situation. Following the meeting, the Argentine government said that its labour ministry is always open to “dialogue and negotiation to reach a consensus between all parties”. The meeting was followed by a four-day weekend.
