The devaluation of the Argentinean peso and soaring prices have driven Argentinean unions to up their requests in terms of wage increases. Pro-government workers’ organizations are calling for emergency measures to compensate the loss in buying power. Some sections of the union movement are asking for periodic collective negotiations in order to regularly adjust wages to inflation.
Emergency transition measures. With the joint negotiations coming near (March), unions had recently demanded wage increases of at least 30 percent to compensate inflation, which amounted to 26.8 percent in 2013 (see article No. 8081). Since last week, the government’s decision to let the peso lose value to the dollar has led to a major monetary crisis and price increase.
