The European Commission has proposed new regulation with a view to increasing the trust of European people in the use of artificial intelligence (AI), such as in the area of employment. The proposals would involve rules that are proportionate to the specific risks associated with AI systems. Once adopted by the European Parliament and the Member States, these measures will be directly applicable throughout the EU. In parallel, the Commission will continue to work with Member States to implement the measures announced in the so-called coordinated plan on AI.
The regulatory proposal from the European Commission (see first attachment), which marks the first-ever legal framework for AI, aims to boost uptake of AI, foster investment and innovation across Europe while ensuring the safety and fundamental rights of citizens and businesses. The new rules, which will be directly applicable in all Member States, once voted by the Parliament and the Member States, have been set out in relation to the specific risks associated with AI systems.
