Following months of debate, Australia’s government secured the crucial Senate adoption of its law regulating union organisations and in exchange promised great protection for whistleblowers.
Malcolm Turnbull’s government can breath a sigh of relief. On the night of 21/ 22 November, the Registered Organisations Commission Bill, which had triggered the dissolution of Parliament and led to new elections in July, was finally adopted by the Senate. Delivering on the liberal-national coalition 2013 promise, the law will allow for an independent watchdog, the Registered Organisations Commission to be established, which will be tasked with monitoring trade union and employers organisations
