Australia: ACTU union presents biggest survey ever made on the Australian working environment

The Australian Central Trade Union (ACTU) released, on September 7th, the biggest survey ever made on the working environment. This survey, called "Voices from Working Australia" and based on the interviews of 42,000 workers, is shattering misconceptions and showing that Australia is sometimes not ranking well compared with other developed countries. It also gives unions' managements tips as to what employees needs in terms of working conditions and their concerns. (Ref. 110566)

Worsening working conditions. The study was made by interviewing 42,000 workers out of the ACTU’s 1.8M members. It focuses on working conditions and states that Australian workers work longer hours than in other developed countries. “We have in fact what we call a productivity squeeze,” ACTU president Ged Kearney, “which means businesses are achieving productivity through a great deal of pressure on workers, and more worrying things like a large amount of unpaid work.” She thinks that Austra
