This popular web-based community marketplace for people and businesses to outsource tasks was singled out in a report by Unions NSW, which indicates that workers are receiving pay below the legal minimum wage. Airtasker, which stressed that it was not acting under union pressure, has nonetheless decided to change things and has updated its recommended rates of pay by up to 45% so workers get $21.25 per hour for all tasks after the 15% Airtasker fee.
The minimum hourly wage in Australia is A$17.70 (€12.45), whereas the Unions NSW report highlighted that Airtasker platform workers were being paid on average A$17.00 (€11.95) for jobs ranging from cleaning to gardening and just A$14.45 (€10.16) for office (administrative and research) based tasks. Their take home pay took into account a 15% commission fee that pays for the site’s skills supply and demand matching service.
