On 7 March, Australian finance minister Katy Gallagher announced that the centre-left Labour government will pay superannuation contributions – of 12% of workers’ salary – for those taking parental leave. Currently, workers do not receive any pension contributions when on parental leave. The government payments will go into their pension pot. The aim of the measure, which will come into force on 1 July 2025, is to “normalise parental leave as a workplace entitlement, like annual and sick leave,
