A draft bill on modern slavery (here) was tabled in the Australian parliament on 28 June and is set to receive support from both sides of the house, guaranteeing its adoption. Once in force, 3,000 companies will be obliged to report on the steps they take to prevent forced labour throughout their global supply chains. The companies concerned are those that turn over more than 100 million Australian dollars (63.5 million euros) per year. A dedicated department, with 3.6 million Australian dollars (2.280 minion euros) of funding, will be set up to help companies adhere to this new obligation. Critics of the bill highlight the lack of sanctions in place for when a company flouts their reporting obligations.
