Bangladesh: first results of the plant inspections implemented as part of the Global Safety Accord among textile subcontractors

On March 10, the reports on the first 10 factories inspected in Bangladesh were published.  These are the direct result from the agreement signed in May 2013 between international trade unions and a lot of western brands from the clothing industry following the Rana Plaza tragedy that killed 1,135.  The first reports show that a lot of plants have security issues but none was forced to completely and permanently close.

The Bangladesh Accord on Fire and Building Safety was signed in May 2013 by over 150 clothing brands and the UNI and IndustriALL international unions (see article No. 130323). Inspecting all the plants supplying these brands was one of the commitment made and an agreement on standard safety rules was even signed for that purpose (see article No. 7971). Thus, 1,500 textile factories (out of approximately 5,000 across the country) will be inspected before September (250 plants/month).
