Belgium: bill adopted to make labour law more flexible

On Thursday 22 February, the country’s lower house adopted a bill to reform the country’s labour law. The plans will relax legislation on working time, create a framework for occasional telework and introduce a permanent contract for temp workers.

Annualised working hours for added flexibility. Employers can alter working hours according to levels of activity and the needs of the company (limited to 2 hours more than the standard working day and 5 hours more than the standard working week, and to the existing daily and weekly working limits). The work counts as overtime if, over a reference period, it exceeds an average of 38 hours. Under previous rules, this period was one quarter, but could be extended to a maximum of one year as part
