Today on 24 May the ‘united front’ of the FGTB, CSC and CGSLB unions organized both a demonstration in Brussels and strike action impacting the transport system, public services and several businesses in protest at the government’s social policy and particularly at the expected reforms over working time. Organizers expect a middling turn-out (some expect 60,000) but in any case today is only the ‘first stage’ of a program of action that is set to escalate up until the autumn where it is scheduled to culminate with a general strike on 07 October.
Out of the blocks immediately the Michel government came to power (in 2014 and 2015 mobilizing against budget measures, c.f. article No. 9341) no concrete results have really been forthcoming from the trade unions’ actions. This time round however the unions do not intend to lessen the pressure after today’s mobilization.
