Campaign 2018, Brazil’s banking sector’s national employee agreement renegotiations that commenced several weeks ago is facing a growing number of difficulties. This highly unionized sector is one of the country’s most important with almost half a million workers (485,000) and banking sector collective agreements are longstanding, stretching back 27 years. The sector’s collective agreement is set to expire on 31 August 2018 and time is running out for establishing a new agreement. Since labor reforms came into force at the end of 2017 (c.f. article No. 10312) collective agreement renewal is no longer occurring automatically. Furthermore in order to secure their rights, the sector’s workers have raised the alarm by organizing in mid July a digital ‘national day of combat’.
“All the rights currently set out in our collective convention, which are the result of years of banking worker struggles are now under threat,” stated the president of the banking employees union of São Paulo, Osasco, and the Ivone Silva region.
