Brazil: in the forthcoming 2017 wage negotiations the Sao Paolo IT sector union will call for a drop in weekly working hours from 40 to 30

On 19 October, Sindpd, the major IT sector trade union body representing IT workers in Brazil’s high tech region of Sao Paulo, announced it would be calling for a drop in weekly working hours from 40 to 30 and with no loss in wages. In 2011 this cohort was almost alone in securing a reduction in working time from 44 hours down to 40.

The union is calling for this reduction because of the high stress levels that IT workers are working under as well as their vulnerability to musculo-skeletal disorders (MSDs). The union also argues that with more free time IT workers would have the opportunity to invest in their own human capital and improve their skills and competences, something that is critical to maintain their employability.
