The law to reform Brazil’s Labour Code (see article n°10312) is due to enter into force from 11 November, 120 days after it was adopted. Trade union groups, the majority of which are opposed to a large number of points contained in the plans, have tried over the last few weeks to secure certain guarantees, by renegotiating collective and company agreements. By doing so, they hope to avoid or delay certain effects the reform could have on working conditions. At Toyota, an agreement of this type has already been reached.
A source of concern over the future of jobs is the added scope for subcontracting, to all areas of companies’ operations. As such, the automobile manufacturer Toyota, which has a factory located in Sorocaba, in the state of São Paulo, has agreed not to apply new rules which would allow it to employ factory workers on subcontractor contracts, on assembly lines for example.
