Work in near-slavery conditions, also known as ‘forced’ or ‘compulsory’ labor, is now growing in Brazilian cities when it used to be in rural areas only. This is the result of the biannual update of the slave labor blacklist released by the Ministry of Labor and Employment in December 2013. 208 new employers were referenced, out of 576 in total in the list.
On December 30, the Brazilian Ministry of Labor released its blacklist (“lista suja”), updated twice a year, found that slave labor has nearly doubled in big Brazilian towns. Now, 29 businesses employing people under near-slavery conditions, as opposed to 14 only 6 months earlier. In total, Pará has the most listed employers (26.08 percent), followed by Mato Grosso (11.23 percent), Goiás (8.46 percent) and Minas Gerais (8.12 percent), the Ministry points out.
