Outstanding in Congress for 19 years, the issue of statutory working time has come back into the national agenda with a demonstration in Brasilia on June 4 organized by all those who defend workers’ rights in the country. But bringing the workweek from 44 down to 40 hours without cutting pay won’t be a bed of roses. The Constitution must be amended and the MPs - who mostly represent employers - view this as a risk of losing competitiveness, whereas the country is already in full employment.
