On January 12, between 7,000 and 30,000 workers from the Volkswagen, Ford, and Mercedes-Benz factories marched in protest at 1,000 job cuts. The march signals an escalation in social conflict that has marked the industry in recent months as well as a clear deterioration in union support for Dilma Rousseff’s government.
Last Monday thousands of automobile workers marched along the motorway near São Paulo protesting a wave of job cuts that is currently hitting the sector. Close to 7,000 factory workers (30,000 according to the march organizers) from Volkswagen-AG, Ford Motor Co, and Mercedes-Benz located at São Bernado do Campo (south-east Brazil) blocked traffic on the motorway for several hours.
