Canada: Manitoba province implements a law recognizing post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) as a work-related occupational illness

Since 01 January 2016, workers in industry, telecommunications, transport, construction, mining, and retail (i.e. activities regulated by the Manitoba Workers Compensation Board) can receive the same access to financial compensation as they would receive for physical work related accidents. This is a first for the country in which the various labor legislative authorities are gradually opening up to issues of mental health.

The Manitoba parliament has relied on a similar law in force in the province of Alberta since 2012 covering post-traumatic stress disorder affecting ‘first responders’ workers (firefighters, ambulance workers, police, etc.). The Manitoba government however has seen fit to extend cover to all professions within its provincial labor law, including the industry sector, telecommunications, construction, mining, and the retail sector.
