Unions in Quebec are doing quite well. Such was the conclusion of a report analyzing developments in the province’s union coverage from 1997 to 2013, published by the Quebec Statistics Institute. Several surprising trends came to light, with notably an increase in young workers union coverage and cover for employees in small businesses.
The report was published on November 13 and analyzes developments in union coverage from 1997 to 2013 according to a variety of indicators including age, gender and size of business. Below the main points are highlighted.
Stable union coverage. In 2013 union coverage in Quebec, also known as union presence, (the % of workers covered by a collective agreement) was 39.5% making 1,381,400 workers. Since 1997, this has only gone down by 2 percentage points and is the highest of all Canada’s province
