On August 31, 2013, at a Founding Convention in Toronto, Canada, Unifor became the largest union organization in the private sector. It is the result of a merger between Canadian Auto Workers union (CAW) and Communication, Energy and Paperworkers (CEP). It is in part of a new strategy for the union, seeking to review its foundation in order to face current challenges and to organize people who are usually not covered by a trade union, e.g. jobseekers as well as young, precarious or even self-employed workers. Armed with its 300,000 members, Unifor is the largest private sector union in Canada and the only one representing unemployed, self-employed as well as women, students and young workers. It is followed by the United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW) with 250 000 members and Steelworkers with over 225 000 members. The process got underway with the drafting of a policy paper titled “A New Union for a Challenging World: Vision and Plan”. This document was adopted by CEP and CAW respectively...
