Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s unexpected defeat during Canada’s federal elections on 19 October has calmed Canada’s unions that had been experiencing increasingly difficult relations with the Conservative Party over recent years. Unions, some of which had supported Tomas Mulcair’s left leaning New Democratic Party (NDP) nonetheless applauded Justin Trudeau’s victory whilst reminding him of his election promises.
Jerry Dias, national president of the largest private sector union Unifor stated he was willing to work with the new government to strengthen the economy and create jobs. “The Liberals have said they want to transform Parliament and the country. Now they have the opportunity. This new government has to install a new spirit of cooperation in Ottawa and work with the NDP,” he declared in a press release. During the election campaign Unifor’s goal had been to topple Stephen Harper and other unions
