Canada’s unions are gearing up in front of the country’s federal elections set for 19 October 2015. Press campaigns, strategic support for certain candidates, various members’ actions… all means available are being used to push aside Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s government, which is being accused of having led reforms that “negatively affect workers” and of having repeatedly tried to undermine the unions.
Unifor, the largest private sector union, the Canadian Labour Congress, and the United Steelworkers union have already indicated their support for the current main opposition party, the New Democratic Party (NPD) led by Thomas Mulcair. In Quebec both the Quebec Federation of Labour (FTQ) and the Confederation of National Trade Unions (CSN) will support NPD candidates likely to oust currently incumbent Conservatives in certain key constituencies – Canadians choose their Prime Minister by voting
