According to German correspondents and information from the China Labour Bulletin (CLB), a Hong Kong-based NGO, there has been a rare series of protests at the automobile manufacturer FAW-Volkswagen. The protests, which took place on Thursday 23 February and brought together more than 500 temporary employees of the firm, were held in front of the local offices of the work arbitration committee at the FAW-VW site in Changchun (Jilin province). These protests are not the first of their kind, as temporary workers have been protesting for months, demanding that VW – the world’s largest automobile constructor – apply the principles contained in its ‘global charter’ for temporary workers (see article n°12713).
Commitment made in 2012. By applying the Temporary Work Charter, Volkswagen committed, among other things, to ensure that interim workers are paid the same as in-house employees as of their tenth month at the company and that such staff are given a firm job offer after 36 months of service.
