Compass: agreement with the IUF international union federation on union freedom at Eurest Algeria
Complaint. Seized by workers at Eurest, a company located in southern Algeria responsible for catering in several multinationals in the region, the IUF filed a complaint, on December 14, 2009, with the British OECD contact (the OECD is in charge of monitoring compliance with the guidelines for multinational enterprises). The union organization accused the parent company, Compass, of failing to respect union representation and collective bargaining rights, contained in those guidelines. It claimed that a dozen workers who tried to form a union, in keeping with Algerian laws, to negotiate the improvement of their working conditions, were fired. The IUF also mentioned a harassment case affecting the union’s general secretary, accused of slander and tried in court for photos made public denouncing working conditions at Eurest. At the time, Compass denied breaking union rights and said that the layoffs were part of a restructuring plan. The group also claimed that the union wasn’t representative enough and explained that the company wasn’t informed of its creation.
