On 23 April, 2008 the Constitutional Court cancelled, with effect from 30 June, 2008, the provisions of the law on Sickness Insurance of Employees, under which sickness benefits are paid starting on the 4th day of incapacity to work. Adopted in 2007, this regulation came into effect on January 1, 2008 as part of reforms to recover State finance, and as a measure against the misuse of sickness insurance by employees. Under the previous legislation, claims for sickness benefits were acknowledged on the first calendar day of incapacity to work, although the benefit corresponded to only 25 percent of the daily assessment basis for the first three days (based on monthly income).
