Denmark’s trade union has the right to take industrial action against Irish airline Ryanair in order to secure a collective agreement covering Ryanair’s new base at Copenhagen. This is the court’s ruling on a case over the legitimacy of collective industrial action against Ryanair that was called for back in February. Denmark’s social model is central to this dispute. Ryanair has pre-empted union plans for ‘significant action’ in the next two weeks by announcing the closure of its Danish base all the while operating its Copenhagen routes.
Underlying causes. Following Ryanair’s announcement in February that it would take legal action against any measures that impeded its operations Denmark’s main union LO appealed to the labor courts (Arbejdsretten) for a ruling on the legitimacy of union action against Ryanair in the pursuit of a collective agreement for the Ryanair team working in Denmark (c.f. article No. 8873).
