The standards adopted in September by the Danish Ministry of Transportation to stopillegal navigation were short-lived. In January, the European Commission gave notice to Denmark, causing the government to change the law and adopt new measures. For their part, road transport unions called for a large mobilization for May 3 to say “No to slavery” in the sector - a collateral effect of the European provision.
One amendment, two new measures. Last September, in order to combat illegal navigation from low-cost truck drivers – mostly from Eastern Europe – the Danish government toughened regulations on transport of goods. Indeed, empty runs or returned packing across borders are no longer recognized as international transport and therefore no longer provide access to cabotage as understood in European law (3 domestic trips within a week).
