Since 1 June 2004, Denmark granted approximately 8000 residence and work permits to nationals of the new Member States. Fears of massive arrivals of badly paid workers and (without Social Security cover) did not materialize. On the contrary, like indicated by the Minister for Employment, Claus Hjort Frederiksen “Eastern European workers helped to relieve the lack of labour in certain sectors, which contributed in a positive way to the economic development of the country”.
