While the unions were formerly opposed to even discussing the idea of a legal minimum wage in Denmark, last week the FTF, Denmark’s second largest union confederation, invited the social partners to revisit the issue as a response to the social dumping that is prevalent across all industries. This is the first time that a traditional union has even evoked the possibility of a minimum wage. However, most of the unions and employers’ bodies have rejected the idea.
“Denmark is one of the rare countries in Europe that does not have a legal minimum wage. Before the EU imposes one on us we have a duty to discuss the issue and be prepared for it”, stated Bente Sorgenfrey, leader of the FTF, on the TV2 channel.
