Denmark: the government is trying to bring back the early retirement issue but is faced with major opposition

The offer to move voluntary early retirement (efterlønnen) which is one of the Commission's recommendations concerning the labor market, and which was presented during a first tripartite meeting on August 28, came across unions' opposition. Two political parties – the Danish People's Party (included in the government) and the social democratic party, are also opposed to this measure. (Ref. 080655)

“Everything is at stake” said the Prime Minister, Anders Fogh Rasmussen, when he convened the Social Partners to a meeting, on August 28, to discuss the recommendations made by the labor market commission, created in December 2007. The objective of the commission, which will deliver its final report in the summer of 2009, is to propose strategies to improve the structure of the workforce and thus enable to achieve the government’s economic goals for 2015.
