The Commission gave a positive answer to the first initiative that received over 1 million signatures. Thus, today, March 20, it presented a series of measures and actions – in areas where it has powers – to meet the signatories’ request: make water a universal right. Nevertheless, the initiative’s organizers consider that the Commission’s response is less ambitious than their expectations.
This European Citizens’ Initiative aimed to drive the Commission to propose a law ensuring that access to water and sanitation becomes a universal right and to promote water and sanitation as essential public services for all. Besides, the initiative calls for the exemption from single market rules and liberalisation for water supply and management of water resources.
