Yesterday, on 27 October, the European Commission adopted its work programme for 2016. In social terms, it does not add to anything that has already been announced, which includes a mobility package that, in particular, tackles the issue of posting of workers as well as the set of minimum social rights. It also points out the initiatives, currently under discussion, which need a boost. These include the proposal to have women on the boards of stock-listed companies and the draft regulation on personal data protection.
The President of the Commission, Jean-Claude Juncker, has already committed to concentrate on the big issues, and to be more visible and effective when it comes to dealing with these. The European executive’s new work programme, which was adopted by the College of Commissioners on 27 October, attempts to move in that same direction. The programme, entitled “No time for business as usual” contains 23 different initiatives. In terms of social matters, the work programme includes:
