EU: European Commission launches the second stage of consultation on the protection of workers exposed to electromagnetic fields

In the document published last week, the European Commission explains that, after the first consultation stage (see our dispatch No. 090796), a majority of the people consulted were in favor of a revision of the 2004 directive on the protection of workers from the risks related to electromagnetic fields. This law aims to protect workers by imposing on employers prevention and protection obligations supervised by exposure limit values to electromagnetic fields. The social partners notably want to make changes including the introduction of “practicable” limit values and guidance for the assessment of risks. Based on the first consultation, and taking account of the work done by the working parties created in 2005 by the tripartite Advisory Committee on Safety and Health at Work and of the recommendations expressed on the subject at international level, the European Commission is presenting the main initiatives for a future legal initiative.
