Fabrice Warneck. Our Alliance defends decent working time in Europe. This day of action specifically targeted rest on Sunday because, lately, there is a trend of deregulation affecting work on Sunday, in order to implement austerity programs. This is what Mario Monti is doing in Italy, where he managed to bring three Italian unions against him. The idea is that, in a crisis, people need to buy more and that one of the keys to that end is to let stores open on Sunday. In Spain, the government is doing the same thing on the entire Madrid community, outside of simply touristy zones. Yet, the argument that opening stores on Sunday is going to create jobs and recovery is not true. In practice, they are mostly student jobs. Of course these people need to work, but they are not industry professionals. They are generally precarious jobs and employees find the shops upside down on Monday. In France, a new law introduced ‘PUCE’ zones, and opening and working conditions for work on Sunday are regulated at local level. This gives rise to a great deal of unfairness between the employees – depending on the political color of the local elected representative.
