On 16 September European Commission President, Ursula von der Leyen, delivered her first State of the Union address. In it the President emphasized the enduring promise of protection, stability and opportunity offered by the social market economy. From the Green Pact to the digital revolution, from migration policy to geopolitics: one-by-one the European Commission head detailed her political priorities for the year ahead along with her vision for Europe, including her intention to quickly present a proposal on minimum salary levels, a revamped industrial strategy, and even more precise objectives for ecological transition.
Throughout the address the President regularly referred to the lessons learnt from the Covid-19 pandemic. “We must move towards a post-corona world; we must not remain in torpor. We must be aware that people want us to move forward, develop a European vision and make effective investments,” she said. According to the Commission head, the current crisis is encouraging us to rethink the link between public health and the environment and to reinject solidarity.
