On September 2, 2008, MEPs expressed themselves on the series of propositions presented by the European Commission at the beginning of July as part of its "social package." This debate is a preliminary to a resolution which should be subject to a vote during the Parliament's next plenary session, after the talks on patient mobility. Xavier Bertrand, French Minister of Labor and current president of the EU Employment and Social Affairs Council, called on the MEPs to support the different social texts which will be presented to the Parliament. Vladimir Spidla, EU Commissioner, defended before the Parliament the “social package” presented early this summer (see our dispatch No. 080558.) Thus, he reminded the need for a renewed social agenda which integrates with no taboos the economic dimensions. “The social and economic objectives are the two sides of the same medal and should closely be coordinated for the benefit of citizens.”
