EU: MEPs ask the Commission to go further in its new health and safety at work strategy

On January 15, 2008, MEPs adopted, with a large majority, the report of the UK Labour MEP, Glenis Wilmot, on the Community strategy 2007–2012 on health and safety at work, presented by the Commission at the beginning of 2007 (see our article n° 070166). Even if MEPs approve of the strategy's general orientations, they think that it is not sufficient, especially concerning the prevention of emerging risks, such as psychosocial risks, and are therefore asking for more targeted prevention policies. Although MEPs welcomed the goal to decrease, in average, industrial accidents by 25% on the 2007-2012 period, set by the European Commission, they think that the new strategy is too weak on several issues:
